Following up on my last post about living consciously and understanding what kind of a life you really want to live.
If you haven’t yet read my last article and understood what you really want, now might be a good time to do that, when you have read and understood, then come back and read this one, because right at this moment, as you are reading this, you are about to break free!!!!!
And sorry already, because I just know that this is going to turn into a ramble with no end, but just try and get the bigger picture will you!
Where do you begin?
You begin by doing something you thought you would never do, you quit ALL you subscriptions, Netflix, tv, internet, newspaper, games, gym membership, basically everything that requires you to pay monthly fees to be part of, keep your phone, and if the internet on your phone won’t do, then at least downsize your internet to the bare minimum. Now don’t worry, you can have all of them back if necessary, but for now just trust me and cancel all those.
Take some time to figure out what kind of life you want now? How much would it cost you to live that life?? When you do so, don’t fall into the trap of thinking that you want a big car and a big house and a hot girlfriend, that’s not the purpose here. What I mean when I say what kind of life, I mean how do you want your day to look? What do you wanna do all day, from when you wake up till you go to bed??
My own perfect day goes something like this:
I wanna wake up when the sun rises, lay in bed and enjoy the birds morning tweets, rise up and eat myself a plate of fruit and have a cup of coffee.
Then I wanna go out and exercise my body and get a nice sweat going, maybe do martial arts and then go home and take a shower. If I am near a beach, then I will go for a swim in the sea before my shower.
Then I will take out my day-planner and begin to plan my day, typically I will not want to ‘work’ more than 4 hours, so I’ll plan that in and plan what I am going to do, what to write about, what kind of freelance work to do or if I need to seek out more clients. When planning is done I want to head out for an early lunch/brunch and bring my laptop, so I can work when I am done eating.
When I am done working for the day, I will either go out in nature for a nice walk with my wife, go fishing with some friends or just alone, if I am fresh and fit, then go for a second workout of the day, and finally if I am tired and bombed out, then I would just relax in bed and read a nice book.
Comes dinner time I would prefer to meet up with a few good friends at a restaurant, eat and have a nice discussion about life and current events, or simply cook at home and spend time with my wife.
Then a slow finish with a movie, a talk, a book or a few youtube videos before heading to bed between 9pm and 10pm.
This is of course a very basic description of how most of my days are spent, they are not by accident, they are this way because this is how I want them to be. Don’t worry about family stuff and special occasions, they are special and not something you plan you life around! And don’t worry, it is totally fine if you want to change you day somewhere down the line, but for now, this is what we go with.
Now you have a basic perfect day, then what?
The next steps are the more exciting ones, especially if you haven’t really gone to far down this road before.
What would it take for you to have this day?? How much money would you need?? Where would you want to live and so forth?? For me it’s quite basic. As of now I (my wife is with me, but this is beyond importance) quit my appartment, sold everything I owned, quit my job, got some freelancing work that can be done from my laptop and now I stay in Asia, this article is being written from a restaurant called Wamm in Ubud in Bali. When I am done writing it, I’ll move on to do some other ‘real’ freelance work.
So my rent vary’s depending on how much luxury I want, but I’ll make a simple calculation for you of what I need per month (USD):
Insurance: around 80$
Rent: around 150$ (300$ split 2 ways)
Food: around 200$
Plane tickets 80$ (visa run, out of the country and back in or to a different location)
All together for me that runs up to around 660$ of set expenses for a month of basic living, now depending on how much extravaganza I throw in there it can be a bit more, but it can certainly also be a lot less. As an example, I am spending next month at a Muay Thai and MMA gym in Chang Mai, Thailand. 3 times training per day and accommodation runs up to 370$ and the food is cheaper than Bali.
What am I getting at here?
Most people plan their lives around their work, I plan my work around how I want to live my life and not my life around how I work! Are you following me?? I am not saying that you cant have a Ferrari, I am saying that if you want a Ferrari you better be damn sure that’s what you really want deep down in you nutsack because that car will add a 1000$ to your monthly expenses and adding that will in turn double your work load and give you half the time to enjoy that car, if you on the other hand are fine with having an old mazda it would only add 50$ and that can easily be made in a couple of hours hard work.
Do you want to spend your life working or do you want to spend it living?? Figure out how much your dream life costs, then figure out how much work it is going to take and what job that can provide it. Whatever you do, just don’t fall into the trap of thinking that you need stupid shit to be happy, you don’t, cause the best things in life aren’t things, they are people, lovers, friendships and experiences.
Just start the process slowly, this transformation takes time and requires a lot of self convincing. I don’t have all the answers, that’s for damn sure, I don’t believe that everybody wants to live the way I do and I don’t want them to. All I want you to do is think about it! Are you living your life the best possible way you can?
